Played Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September The Solargain Suns completed their warm up for the Australian APL at Pine Rivers in November by taking out the Inaugural Mandurah APL Cup. Joining regular members Clive Adams, Thomas Mitchell and Matt Ellul were honorary suns members Simon Alden and Shelley Radcliffe. Alden and Radcliffe were picked up in the APL draft held last Tuesday evening and made strong contributions to the title in a number of sectional games before Adams, Mitchell and Ellul stepped up in the finals.
The Suns opponents in the final were the Osborne Park team of Gary Caffell, Neil Payne, Daniel Adam and Pam Chalmers. After a slow start in the first set and being down 0-5 after the first two ends, Osborne Park won the last three ends of the set but couldn’t find enough shots to finish the set down 4-5.
The second set saw Osborne Park continue there domination of the scoreboard before taking the set 8-1 in fornt to send the set to the tiebreaker end. With the end see sawing through good bowls and a touch of luck, it was Adams who put the jack in the ditch with his second bowl to leave the Suns shot with a bowl near the ditch. When the last Caffell bowl pulled up short, the Solargain Perth Suns had survived a great game to take the title 5-4 1-8 1-0.
