The World Bowls Championships are held every four years, with bowlers from 24 countries competing. The 2012 Championships will be held in South Australia. The Australian Side is selected by the National Selectors.
The World Bowls
Tour is the brain child of the The PBA (Professional Bowlers Association),
World Bowls LTD and the World Indoor Bowls Council.
The aim was to set up "a series of Premier Bowls Events at which
the top players in the world can play." These events are held
yearly throughout England, attracting television coverage and huge
prize money. As a secondary objective that came up from this aim,
the WBT also seeks to increase awareness, create revenue for
reinvestment back into the sport and to promote and enhance young
talent. The Professional Bowlers Associated jumped at the chance to
provide qualifiers for the International Open in 1997. The
response from the UK was amazing, and proved that the competition
was open to everyone, among the competitors trying to qualify was
an 11 year old boy, a man in a wheelchair and several high ranking
female players. The PBA has finally reached WA and produced it's
first ever qualifier in David Opie. The opportunity is now open to
WA players. The competition is fierce, but the rewards are
great.
"Remember, no qualifications are required. All ambitious bowlers who are serious about their game are warmly welcomed."

Probably attracting the highest esteem in lawn bowls is the Commonwealth Games. Held every four years the next Games will be in Delhi in 2010. Australia dominated in the Melbourne games with Gold medals in the Men's Singles and Triples and Gold in the Women's Pairs. They also won Silver in the Women's Triples and Bronze in the Men's Pairs. The prestige of representing Australia makes this truly the elite level of lawn bowls.
