Hawks flying high at Helensvale
The stage is set for another stellar showdown at the finals of the $50,000 National 5 A Side competition held at Club Helensvale this week, with four stellar teams still in the running to take out the 2013 title. Local hopes, Club Helensvale, had a strong day’s performance on the green yesterday, winning five-and-a-half games from their eight rounds, ensuring they finished top of the table on 55 points. On the last day of sectional play, NSW club Raymond Terrace proved to be the biggest mover and shaker, as they charged from sixth place into second spot at completion of the qualifying rounds, finishing strongly on 49 points. Defending champions Warilla will again feature in the semi-final showdown, completing the third day in emphatic style to secure third position on the ladder with 47 points. Results also went the way of local hopes Burleigh, as they snuck into fourth spot on 47 points to claim the last berth in today’s semi-finals. In one of the closest finishes ever had in the history of the event, Mt Lewis and Ocean Grove will be proud yet slightly disappointed with the results, just missing out on a spot in the semi-finals by just 1 and 2 points respectively. Semi-final action will commence this morning at 8.15am with the grand final to begin at 12.55pm.
