Hastings Wins Record 4th Title

Played at Morley 27th January 2014 Therese Hastings (Manning) won a record 4th Western Australian Women’s State Singles title today when she defeated Linda Warburton (Mosman Park) 25-18 at the Morley Bowling Club today. Before today Hastings was equal with Mrs Edna Cheffins and Mrs B Ennis with three titles but today saw Hastings set a record that will be hard to beat.
The final started in blustery conditions that would slowly get even stronger as they neared the finished line. Having all the singles finals experience, Hastings started with supreme confidence and led Warburton 6-0 after four ends. A couple of twos in consecutive ends by Warburton settled the nerves and the large crowd settled down to a great battle. With both players playing a standard of bowls that belied the conditions, first Hastings would win consecutive ends to open up a lead and then Warburton would come back and close the gap. After 17 ends Hastings had not been headed and at one stage had led by as many as seven shots, but after winning four ends in a row Warburton grabbed a two to finally take the lead 17-16 and look to have all the momentum. However this lead was short lived as Hastings took a two on the next end to regain the lead which she never surrendered again. A full count of four on the 22nd end took Hastings out to a 22-17 and the title within reach. A single from Warburton slowed Hastings progress but it only delayed the inevitable and a single and then a two gave Therese Hastings her 4th Western Australian Taylor Bowls State Singles title.
