Men’s State Singles down to the Semi Finals

by admin on January 26, 2014

Played Sunday 26th January 2014 On Monday 27th January Western Australia will crown a brand new Taylor Bowls State Singles Champion at the Morley Bowling Club when all four semi finalists start the day shooting for their first state singles title. In fact the clubs that the semi finalists come from have also had limited success in this event.
John Slavich and Stuart Bainbridge will be looking to take the title back too Doubleview for the first time since the great Dennis Katunarich in the 1994/95 season. Katunarich is the only Doubleview member to have won the title even though the club has boasted some of the great players of the past twenty years.
South Perth has not had a state singles champion since the legendary Frank Harrison won in the 1969/70 season and this year Scott Walker will be looking to remedy that problem.
Daniel Brown has extra incentive as he strives to become the first Kardinya member to win the state singles champion when he takes to the green in the semi finals at Morley.
In the quarter finals at Bassendean, John Slavich had to fight back from a small deficit and near elimination to overtake fellow state squad member Tom Mitchell (Vic Park Carlisle) 21-20. Needing three to win, Mitchell lost a measure that would of given him the necessary three to claim the match. Slavich took full advantage of the reprieve to come from behind and claim a place in the semi finals.
Slavich will face the 2012-13 Rosenthal Medallist Daniel Brown when he picked up his game in the second half of his quarter final to beat Peter Cole also of Kardinya 21-12. In a game of seesawing scores, Cole started strongly in winning the first couple of ends but found himself well behind as Brown found his range. After a lapse in the middle ends from Brown saw Cole again close in, Brown strung together multiple winning ends to take a match winning lead and take out a hard fought victory.
South Perth’s Scott Walker had all the answers in his match against previous winner John Goddard (Osborne Park). A well earned early lead was swallowed up by Goddard as he drew level in the middle stages of the game before Walker steadied and continually out drew his more decorated opponent and ran out a 21-10 victor.
State squad member Stuart Bainbridge was devastating in his match against giant killer Sam Perica (Stirling). The previous day Perica took out Australia A member Clive Adams but he had no answers to the Bainbridge draw in the quarter final match up. Bainbridge was in no mood to give his opponent any chances as he raced away to win 21-4.
