Flapper may cap a big year

Ocean Grove bowler Matt Flapper has been short- listed for one of the sport’s highest honours, as Meagan Rooth reports for the Geelong Advertiser. Fresh from a scintillating international tour with the Australian team, Flapper is a finalist for the Australian Sports Commission International Bowler of the Year award. Before, Flapper had just 12 international -level outings to his name. That soon changed. Among his highlights last year were silver medals in the 8 Nation Series fours and pairs, as well as runner -up results in the Australian Super 6 and Australian Sides Championships. Flapper was also part of the teams that beat New Zealand in the trans -Tasman series and Malaysia at Ocean Grove. He is up against seasoned campaigner Aron Sherriff, of Ettalong Memorial Bowls Club in New South Wales, for the International Bowler of the Year nod. Sherriff has won the award for the past two years. The winner will be announced at a function in Burnie, Tasmania, next month to coincide with the Australian Sides Championships. Other awards will be presented to the top male and female bowlers, juniors, community officers, officials, coaches and volunteers.
