Five-time Australian Open finalist Barrie Lester’s campaign to win an elusive title is off and running, with the Australian Jackaroos member easing into the second round of the men’s singles. A strong finish saw Lester, the discipline’s 10th seed, secure a 21-10 win over Kyabram’s David Cartwright in wet conditions at Darebin International Sports Centre in the opening round of $140,000 tournament. He will now encountner the winner of Rohan Wilson and Peter Freestone in the second round, starting on Monday morning. Joining Lester with a berth in the second round is Adelaide Endurance’s Australian Premier League star, Scott Thulborn. Thulborn won the last three ends of the match, completing a 21-11 win over Bob Watt. In a shock result, Super Six singles champion Andrew Howie has been knocked out in the first round of the men’s singles. Last chance qualifier, and coach of the victorious APL side Brisbane Gold, Alex Murtagh secured a 21-11 win over Howie in what is the biggest upset of the event so far. Murtagh came through last chance qualifying and grabbed his chance as he defeated one of the nominees for Bowls Australia’s prestigious Male Bowler of the Year award. A late revival from Howie wasn’t enough to avoid defeat as Murtagh completed his win in an hour and a half. Murtagh will now face ACT’s Damon Jeffery, after a clinical 21-11 victory over Charlie Brinie.
