AO favourite’s hopes now hinge on fours discipline
The trials and tribulations continue to flow at this year’s Australian Open as pre-tournament favourite Aron Sherriff’s hopes of securing AO glory now hinge in the fours discipline, after succumbing to the pressures of the men’s singles and pairs draw. The 2010 Australian Open singles champion bowed out of the main draw earlier today, gracious in defeat to Western Australia’s Dave Rankin 18-21. The star was last night knocked out of the men’s pairs draw, with his hopes of Australian Open silverware now hinging on the men’s fours draw, which commences at 6:30pm tomorrow night at the Darebin International Sports Centre. Rankin will now meet David Bloom in the third round, after he accounted for Tasmania’s Cameron Tegg 21-18. Across the greens, the hopes of sealing championship glory in the men’s singles draw have dimmed for Australia A Squad powerhouse Ben Twist, after being pinned in his arm wrestle battle against Tweed Heads Stephen Halmai, 20-21. The former English pairs champion took two hours on rink to diminish Twists hopes, setting up a third round berth against Cabramatta’s Ray Pearse, after he downed Nic Gosley in a comfortable second round line up, 21-14.
