Bowlers with a Disability on path to AO glory
Bowlers with a Disability are set to take to the Darebin greens tomorrow morning as they assert their claim on this year’s coveted $140,000 Australian Open. The round-robin tournament will see athletes compete in the men’s and women’s singles division for the highly sought-after crowns in disciplines for the vision impaired, bowlers with a disability and bowlers with an intellectual disability. With six titles on offer to those who triumph in year’s draw, the rinks will be ablaze as state pride will be put to the test across the Australian Athletes with a Disability (AAWD), AUSRAPID and Australian Blind Bowlers Association (ABBA) categories. Last year’s crown in the women’s AAWD division, Wendy Odgers will be back in action hoping to snare back-to-back titles, while young-gun Nathan Appleton will be back with a vengeance alongside fellow 2013 Australian Open champion Kaye Freeman in the AUSRAPID discipline who will both be hoping to hoist up the silverware once more. South Australia’s Kath Murrell will be looming ominously again in this year’s ABBA draw after the powerhouse took home the 2013 Australian Open championship, while runner-up of the past two Australian Open’s Andrew Ness will be hoping to go one step further this year as he commences his campaign in the men’s draw.
