Women’s Country All-Stars v Metropolitan Challenge
The Yokine Bowling Club was the venue for one of the closest Women’s Country v Metro Challenges in recent history with only four shots separating the sides over 168 ends. There were two drawn rinks and three rink wins a piece as the Metropolitan Side just managed to retain the coveted trophy with a hard-fought 148-144 aggregate win.
Bowls WA Academy Player Brooke Newstead lead for Greeta Harland who enjoyed a 24-15 win over Ronnie Lee (Jerramungup). Bianca-Rose Riseborough will make her debut at a National Sides Championship later this month also had a convincing 23-16 win playing second in a rink comprising the in-form Mosman Park duo Beverly Baker and Audrey Stokes and skipped by Anne Crabb, proving to strong for Shirley Morony (Williams). Australian A representative Kristina Krstic played third to State skipper Lisa Featherby, who also got over the line against 18-14 against a determined Bev Scott (Capel).
Shenayde Heldt and Liz West were happy with their last hit-out before the Sides Series but had to settle for a 20-20 scoreline as Faye Kelly drew with Kaye Burton (Northampton). Robyn Jolly and Pam Chalmers shared a similar fate as State Over 60 team mates Kaye Blackwell and Vicki Spragg (Dudley Park) drew 15-15.
However, former WA greats Noelene Abe (Corrigin) and Lee Poletti (Geraldton) tried their best to tip the balance back in the Country’s favour with 21-15 and 19-15 wins over Helen Morss and Rinkse Butcher respectively. Vicki Ellis (Bolgart) too managed to get the better of Elizabeth Brooke 24-18 but it wasn’t quite enough to wrest back the trophy.
The Metropolitan Over 60 Side ran out more comfortable winners 84-66 against their Country counterparts but there was plenty of talent on both sides to give the new selection panel much to think about in the lead up to the National Championships in Queensland.
