This afternoon’s quarter-final draws are locked and loaded after the last session of round two rubbers determined the fate of the remaining Australian Indoor Championships hopefuls at Tweed Heads. Former event winner and last year’s finalist Maria Rigby endured an arm-wrestle encounter against Kathryn Clerke to prevail 6-11, 7-6, 3-1, while 2010 champion Brett Wilkie also advanced to the business end of the competition, after defeating Alan Hurst 11-4, 7-5. Joining the two previous titleholders in the winners’ circle in this morning’s 10.00am session were Australian Jackaroos squad member Barrie Lester, who produced a clinical performance against William McIlwain 9-4, 14-2, Bribie Island’s junior spearhead Natasha Jones, who accounted for Elizabeth Blackwell 8-5, 6-4, Carol Bannister, who edged out former Australian squad member Sarah Boddington 6-5, 3-9, 4-0, and last year’s Australian Open pairs winner Andrew Rees, who bundled out Chad Twentyman 10-7, 11-6. Taking to the green for the 12.00pm session of quarter-finals in the men’s draw are former English representative Steve Halmai against Raymond Terrace’s Michael Abel, Chris Herden against Wilkie, National Champion of Champion singles winner David Holt against Lester. In the women’s field, giant-killer Janine Katon faces another testing task against Kristy Thatcher, after dethroning Karen Murphy last night, Saint Johns Park junior ace Jamie-Lee Worsnop faces another hurdle in Rigby, and Jones will square off against Bannister. Two further quarter-final encounters will be staged at 2.00pm, with Australian Open pairs champion Andrew Rees pitted against APL Perth Suns star Clive Adams, and former Scottish dynamo Kay Moran against Australia A squad member Chloe Stewart.
