Australian’s on track in Malaysia
Ben Twist had a convincing win in his second round singles encounter against Malaysia’s Zulhilmie Redzuan 21-8. Twist put on a clinical display with a combination of precision draw shots and trailing jacks when he was down to give himself a handy 10 nil lead. It took his Malaysian opponent seven ends to score however once Redzuan was on the board his confidence grew and he went on to win four of the next five ends, reducing the margin to five. Twist regained control, nailing the jack on consecutive ends to extend his lead to 13-6. Twist held shot on the next end however his bowl fell over giving Redzuan the shot and he then drew another with his last bowl. Ben replied with some cracking draw shots over the next four ends to run away with a comfortable victory 21-8 and make it two wins from two starts in his singles campaign. Twist has three games left in his section and will play Malaysia ‘A’, China and New Zealand in the coming days. Australia’s mixed fours combination has suffered their first loss of the tournament going down narrowly to Malaysia ‘B’. From the first end Australia and Malaysia went shot for shot until 8 ends had passed and the scores were still level at 9 all. The Aussie’s let the Malaysian’s jump ahead conceding the first consecutive multiples of the match, a four and two left them needing six shots in five ends. The Australian’s rallied to score 3 shots in 2 ends and on the next they held a good one until the Malaysian skip converted with his last bowl to turn the head back in Malaysia’s favour. Malaysia was 5 shots in front of the Australian’s however time would permit that only 14 ends would be completed in this match. Australian skip Ben Twist had the opportunity to trail the jack 2 feet for a count of 5 and missed by the smallest of margins. Australia salvaged 2 making the final score 14-17 to Malaysia. The Australian’s have two games remaining in their section of five and will need to defeat Hong Kong China on Wednesday to still be in a positon to finish in the top three and qualify for finals. Anne Johns is the last Australian in action tonight in a third round singles encounter against Brunei.
