Safety Bay Champs take the Over 60’s Pairs Title
Played Friday 14th November Maureen Beard and Jennifer Kite (Safety Bay) outlasted all-comers to claim their first Women’s Over 60’s State Pairs title at Victoria Park Carlisle Bowling Club today. A previous runner up in the event in 2009-10, Beard and Kite lead for the majority of the final against the highly talented duo of Kaye Blackwell and Rinske Butcher (North Beach).
In near perfect conditions and on a typically good Victoria Park Carlisle green, all players put on a show worthy of being the final. After an even start, Beard and Kite edged away to a 7-3 lead after 7 ends only to see Blackwell and Butcher draw level with a 4 on the 8th end. However far from dropping confidence, the Safety Bay girls took back the lead with a 4 of their own and followed it up over the next couple of ends to lead 14-8 after 12 ends of the 18 end game. For the remaining 6 ends first one team would win an end and then the other would win the next. While this was keeping the North Beach duo in the game, they could not string together 2 ends in a row to completely get back in the game. With the title on the line in the last end and with Safety Bay leading 19-17, it was Kite in the leading position who drew a toucher to put one hand on the title. When Beard drew a second shot it left Blackwell with a difficult squeeze of the jack to get a win. As the bowl turned under the head, Safety Bays Maureen Beard and Jennifer Kite could finally claim the Women’s Over 60’s Pairs title.
