Merredin local Matthew France has won Country Bowler of the Year, in a prestigious awards night to celebrate the sport, Courtney Madigan of the Merredin Mercury reports.

Mr France said he was very proud of Merredin Bowling, who he plays for, with 2015 being a particularly successful year for the club.

“It was a real surprise to win Country Bowler of the Year,” he said.

“I had no idea I was going to win.”

Bowls WA Operations Manager Aaron Delaporte said Mr France’s win was achieved primarily off his win in the Men’s Country Week Singles.

“That win is without doubt the premier country title of the season, with 522 players participating in the Men’s division,” Mr Delaporte said.

“I know Matthew was very honoured to have won the award which was presented by Bowls WA board member Hendy Cowan.

“Matthew seemed particularly proud of his efforts and the support of his club.

“He made special mention of the team mates Brian Gearing and Adrian Chesson who where semi-finalists in the Men’s Pairs competition which enabled Merredin to win the PS Bignell Shield as best performed club at Men’s Country Week.”
