One win to each WA side at the National Championships
Another day of mixed results at the National Over 60’s Championships as the WA Men’s and Women’s sides both recorded a win and a loss today.
The Men started the day in brilliant fashion with a huge 75-43 win over the ACT which saw all three rinks with wins. The Steve O’Neill rink of Glyn Vaughan, Frank Carbone and Sam Perica doing most of the damage with a resounding 35-15 victory. In the afternoon it was much tougher going against the Victorians. The rink of Evans, Thorn, Bolton and Nicol had a very unfortunate start dropping a 7 on the opening end and found it tough to recover going down 19-28. It was only Gary Caffell’s side with Coyle, Kuziela and Holt who came away with a win against a strong Victoria side 20-18. The Men are still right in contention however if they can win their remaining matches.
The Women’s team found the morning game against ACT a very tough affair. Like the previous day a poor start proved costly. The side rallied in the middle stages however they had little left in the finish losing several crucial ends at the finish. The final score of 48-64 looks much worse as WA had closed to 44-47 but simply ran out of steam. In the afternoon the Women’s side put in clearly their best performance of the tournament so far against Victoria. The rink of Kathy Gobbart, Renate Coote, Rhonda Prosser and Anne Crabb had a day out winning 28-7 against former Australian International Joyce Lindores. Elaine McDonald and her side of Irene Leahy, Vicki Spragg and Linda Warburton also bowled well to record a 17-15 win and keep the WA team in medal contention.
Tomorrow’s matches will see WA play a formidable NSW in the morning before taking on the Northern Territory in the afternoon.
