Silver Medal for WA Ladies
The last day of competition provided an exciting finish as the Victorian Men and Queensland Women took home gold medals at the National Over 60’s Championships in Launceston, Tasmania. Western Australia didn’t go home unrewarded as the WA ladies who were running seventh after two days of competition won their remaining four matches to finish second behind the undefeated Queensland side.
Unfortunately things didn’t go to plan for the WA Men’s side who were sitting on top spot going into the last day of play but in a four way battle with NSW, Victoria and Queensland. WA however had a day to forget turning in two very disappointing performances as they were completely out bowled in the morning by South Australia and again in the afternoon by Tasmania. Steve O’Neill’s rink of Sam Perica, Frank Carbone and Glyn Vaughan doing the best on the day winning their match against Tasmania 16-11.
The WA Women will be celebrating tonight two fantastic performances as they didn’t drop a rink today to leap frog into winning a silver medal. All twelve players were outstanding with some massive wins registered against SA and Tasmania. Kathy Gobbart’s side of Renate Coote, Rhonda Prosser and Anne Crabb winning by 9 and 16, Lee Poletti’s team of Kerry Andersen, Linda Young and Rinske Butcher by 10 and 4 and Elaine McDonald’s rink of Irene Leahy, Vicki Spragg and Linda Warburton by 12 and 7. It was a credit to the team to finish the series so strongly.
The WA sides will have a combined dinner and presentations tonight at which the players of the series will be announced. A story will be posted on the website tomorrow regarding the winners of these awards.
