World Singles Champion of Champion commences at Club Helensvale

by admin on November 16, 2015

The World Singles Champion of Champion event commences at Club Helensvale on the Gold Coast this morning.

Adelaide’s Scott Thulborn, who helped the Adelaide Endurance to their third consecutive APL final appearance last week at Club Pine Rivers, and Taren Point’s Katrina Wright have earned the privilege of representing Australia on the international stage, by virtue of winning last year’s Australian Champion of Champions event.

The men’s field features 22 players, while 19 will line-up in the women’s event this week.

Thulborn has been drawn on section one of the men’s draw, against the likes of Botswana, Canada, England, Fiji, Isreal, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, Spain and Zimbabwe, with a first round match against Zambia’s Alexander Barkley at 9.00am AEST, followed by a round two encounter against Japan’s Russell Forsyth at 1.00pm.

Wright is also in section one of her women’s draw, pitted against Fiji, Japan, Netherlands, Malaysia, South Africa, United States, Wales and Zimbabwe, with a round one rubber against Zimbabwe’s Jane Rigby and then a round two bye.

Regardless of the result this week, Thulborn will get a second chance at the coveted world title, having gone back-to-back at the Australian Champion of Champion event with a victory just a few months ago at Coolum Beach in Queensland.

Club Helensvale won the bid to host the World Bowls event in 2015 and 2016, while NSW’s St Johns Park will get the honour in 2017 and 2018.

All the action can be seen at Club Helensvale from today till Sunday, November 22.
