North Beach Over 60’s Women’s Triples Champions
Kaye Blackwell, Rinske Butcher and Ann Drayson (North Beach) are the 2015-2016 AERO Bowls Women’s Over 60’s State Triples Champions after defeating Maureen Beard, Jennifer Kite, Irene Arndt (Safety Bay) 22-6 in the final at the Osborne Park Bowling Club.
In the Semi Finals, Blackwell cruised through her game with a 21-7 win over Maria McCormack, Carol Wright, Vicki Eva (Mosman Park) while Beard had to fight much harder in overcoming Julie Lindsay, Roma Dunn, Peg Currie (Dudley Park) 18-17.
The final was played in blustery conditions on a fast green. While these conditions may seem difficult to many, for teams from North Beach and Safety Bay this would have seemed like a home away from home and the quality of the game showed they had no problems adjusting.
Blackwell jumped out to a significant lead early and by the 10th end of the 18 end game she lead 10-3. So while scoring multiples in one end was difficult for both teams Blackwell was doing enough to have the shot at the conclusion of most ends. A three on the 11th end was answered with a two and a single to Beard to keep her team in it. However a run of three consecutive scoring ends to Blackwell put the North Beach triple eleven in front with only two ends to play.
With the Safety Bay triple chasing numbers to stay in the contest, Blackwell piled on the pressure and took a five on the 17th end to give them an insurmountable lead and the teams shook hands with one end remaining and Kaye Blackwell, Rinske Butcher and Ann Drayson as the champions.
