Round in Review – Finals Edition

by admin on March 21, 2016

The 2015/16 Saturday Pennant season has come and gone and now players can enjoy a few months of well earned rest. The biggest week in WA bowls certainly lived up to its billing with most pennants being decided on the very last end of the game. Congratulations to all those who won pennants or promotion and we look forward to seeing you again next season.
NOTE: Men’s Pennant Winners photo’s shown at the end of this article.

With so much at stake it’s only natural that players would be trying their absolute best. One rink whose best was more than good enough was the Armadale 4th Division rink of Ron Mackay,David Helmuth ,Ron Wilson,Robert Landers who won by 32 shots in the first round of the 4th Red promotion finals. Their 45-13 win set up a comfortable win the day got better when the side secured promotion in the next game.
There was another 32 shot win on the weekend. Stanley Bartlett, Keith Edson, Alan Wilkinson and Donald Haddow had 39-7 win to set up a first round win for Rossmoyne 1 in the 2nd Division/1 Blue challenge playoff. Again in the second round the side secured promotion with a win and move into 1st Division next season.
The biggest rink win in the women’s finals played last week was 26 shots by Robyn Jolly, Lara Merz, Shenayde Heldt and Elle Ariael in 1st Division Red. The win secured the aggregate in the semi-final despite a loss on the other Manning rink as the side made their way into the final in which they were ultimately successful.
Big counts can be game changers in finals and no count is bigger than an eight. In the 5th Division Blue promotion finals the Hollywood-Subiaco team of John Duncan, Bill Chellew, Laurie Ward and Colin Graves picked up an eight badge in their team’s win over Innaloo to secure promotion. No doubt it was timely wit the count coming on the 17th end and making a late impact on the game.
The biggest win without claiming a pennant flag goes to the unlucky foursome from Stirling 1st White of Kyle McIlroy, Mark Pasalich, Mick Marovic and Doug Pekovic who registered a massive 36-9 win. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to get the team over the line as South Perth who the aggregate by two shots. The opposition rink skippered by Ross Bresland no doubt handed out a few thankyous to their other twelve team mates who covered the margin.
Spectators who journeyed down to Yokine to watch the 1st Division finals were treated to an amazing spectacle. Tension hung in the air all day as all games were close. The biggest winning margin at Yokine that day was just two shots. With every game coming down to the last bowl of the day the atmosphere at Yokine was something to behold and overall was a great advertisement to the game of bowls.
