Australian Indoor Championships

by admin on August 18, 2016

The 2016 Australian Indoor Singles Championship begins Monday August 22 at the Tweed Heads Bowling Club, NSW. Tweed Heads will play host to some of the best players in the country including defending champions Jeremy Henry and Carla Krizanic as they all try to claim one of Australia’s most prestigious titles. Five Western Australians are making the trip east to compete and to prove they can match it with the nation’s best.
Cambridge’s Clive Adams returns after a round of 32 exit last year and is the first West Aussie in action on day one. He faces Victoria’s Jerome Coles in his first round match. Adams will be looking for a strong performance in his first game as he seeks to improve on last year’s result.
Scott Walker is beginning to qualify for major events more consistently. His Indoor Singles qualification follows his PBA World Pairs appearance earlier this year. The South Perth man faces a tough campaign from the get go having drawn 2014 semi-finalist Steve Halmai from New South Wales.
Joint Beryl Godfrey Trophy winner Shenayde Heldt goes across to Tweed looking to build on the performance she showed at the side series. She goes up against Australian World Championships team member Rebecca Van Asch in what will be a difficult game for Heldt. The Tasmanian comes in good form having recently won the Australian Open Women’s Pairs.
Heldt’s Manning club mate Matthew Mitchell has capped off a great year by qualifying for the Indoor Championship. He goes up against South Australian Jeff Krebbekx in the first round. Mitchell will be looking to build his interstate profile with a strong performance after making his side series debut earlier in the year.
Mosman Park’s Bev Baker is the last West Australian to hit the green in the first round of tournament. Baker has been given a tough draw coming up against Australian legend Karen Murphy first up. Murphy holds the record for the most Women’s Indoor titles with six and is the only woman to have won the event multiple times.
