WA drop back in the pack

by admin on October 11, 2016

Australian Senior Sides Championships Western Australia has failed to capitalise on home ground advantage and its promising start to the Australian Senior Sides Championships winning just one of their past four games in rounds 3 and 4 of the 7 game round robin event at Osborne Park Bowling Club
The victory for the women’s side on Tuesday afternoon is the only win for either side in the last two rounds.
The reversal in form has seen the men’s team drop from first to fifth in the space of two matches whilst the women have maintained their own fifth placed position.
After winning their first two games the men fell by two shots to South Australia on Tuesday in a game where no rink was decided by more than three shots. With the aggregate level on the last end WA skipper Graham Evans had a chance to win the match but couldn’t draw the shot with either of his last two bowls.
That loss was followed up by a seven shot loss the next morning to Queensland in windy conditions which the Queenslanders handled slightly better. WA’s rink of Robbie Ball, Pat Caffell, Lindsay Thorn and Glyn Vaughan winning by 6 shots to be the best for WA.
Kathy Gobbart carried the aggregate with her team’s 14 shot win against South Australia for the side’s second win in a row. However there would be no third as Queensland overcame the hosts on all three rinks to record a comfortable 20 shot win.
With games against New South Wales, Tasmania and Victoria still to come both sides will have to face the current leaders. New South Wales are the only undefeated women’s side and Victoria lead the men’s competition also yet to drop a game.
Individually Gobbart and Kaye Blackwell each have two wins from the first four rounds while Lee Poletti is yet to get her first win on the board. For the men Graham Evans and Gary Caffell have lost their top two positions on the skipper’s ladder falling to fourth and eleventh respectively. Evans has three wins on the board whilst Caffells consecutive losses means he is joined by Robbie Ball on two.
