Medals unlikely for WA

Australian Senior Sides Championships Western Australia appears unlikely to win a gold medal at the Australian Senior Sides Championships at Osborne Park Bowling Club.
Two wins from as many games sees the men in third place a game and rink points behind the top team two teams Victoria and South Australia. The women after three consecutive losses find themselves out of the running in sixth position.
The men had a strong win over New South Wales on Wednesday afternoon winning two rinks and drawing one to win the aggregate by 17 shots. Thursday morning’s game against Victoria was possibly the WA boys’ best win of the week with two threes on the last two ends by Gary Caffell deciding the match. Holding one and a drawn aggregate Caffell sat out a Victorian bowl for three with his last to win the aggregate for Western Australia by two shots and his own rink by one.
The women struggled in their match against an undefeated New South Wales side with Kaye Blackwell’s one shot win the only positive in a 27 shot loss. Their match against Victoria was a much stronger showing with Lee Poletti picking up her first win of the week and a draw coming from Blackwell. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough as Victoria won the aggregate by seven shots to dispel any hopes of a medal for WA.
The ladies can move as high as fourth with a big win in their final game against Tasmania.
The men maintain a faint hope of winning gold should they beat Tasmania on all three rinks but it seems unlikely. Finishing first would require South Australia to fall to the winless Northern Territory side whilst Victoria would have to lose every rink to fourth placed New South Wales.
A full wrap of the Championships will be provided later tonight after presentations.
