Women’s State Fours championships The 2016 Women’s State Fours was won by Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, Robyn O’Brien and Shenayde Heldt at Bassendean on Sunday. They defeated Elaine McDonald, Irene Leahy, Chris Ace-Watson and Shelley Radcliffe 24-8 in the final to become the first all Manning team to win the title in the event’s history.
Morss controlled the game early in her semi-final against Lisa Featherby, Linda Warburton, Robyn Jolly and Helen Heal and maintained that advantage until the end to win the 16-7. McDonald found the going tougher in her semi-final against Lee-Anne Green, Adelle Parker, Paye Hoad and Robyn Marland. McDonald’s side dropped a few numbers throughout the match but did enough to win 17-16.
The highly anticipated final included five previous winners and looked set to be a close contest. Such hopes were put to bed early when Morss and her side came out with barrage scoring three shots on each of the first four ends.
At 12-0 the situation already looked dire for McDonald who was in desperate need of a number of her own to get her side back in the match. That number was not forthcoming as Morss and Hastings in particular ensured that their opponents remained safely in their hip pocket.
The score did get as close as 13-6 but when it looked like McDonald might have the chance to make a run the Manning side scored four to re-establish their advantage. From there they never looked under threat with the match finishing an end early at 23-8.
The win gave Hastings her fifth State Fours crown and Morss her fourth while O’Brien and Heldt became the first new winners since 2011.
