Commonwealth Games 2018 – Volunteers Wanted

by admin on December 22, 2016

Interested in becoming a volunteer for the bowls events at the 2018 Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast?

Here’s how you can be.

Dates

The Commonwealth Games commences on April 4, 2018 and concludes on April 15.

The Lawn Bowls competition runs from April 5 to April 13. In addition to the days of competition there will be volunteering opportunities at the training venues from March 25.

You will need to be available for shifts as required across all dates of the event. You will not be able to pick and choose your shifts so make sure that you can block out all of the days in your diary.

Location

The Lawn Bowls competition will be held at the Broadbeach Bowls Club.

This venue has been recently renovated making it truly a world class bowls facility.

The venue will also act as one of the training venues, alongside the Musgrave Hill Bowls Club.

How the process works

You will need to complete an expression of interest application (the link is at the bottom of this article) to be considered for pre-approval for a role within the Lawn Bowls events. This expression of interest application process will close at 5pm, Friday, January 13, 2017.

Successful applicants will be informed in early 2017 and will be given a link to the official Commonwealth Games portal to complete their application.

If you miss out on a Lawn Bowls role you will be able to apply for general roles directly through Gold Coast Commonwealth Games volunteers portal in February 2017.

This is your only chance to be pre-approved for a specific role with Lawn Bowls.

Once the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games has reviewed all of the applications, they will let you know whether you have been pre-approved or not and will provide you with the relevant links to continue on your volunteering journey.

Cost and benefits

All travel and accommodation costs will be at the expense of the Volunteer.

However, public transport in and around the Gold Coast will be free for Volunteers during Games time.

All volunteers will receive a uniform kit, meals if required during a rostered shift, and most importantly the experience of a lifetime.

Roles available

Field of Play Supervisor: This role is very important as you will be responsible of all volunteers on the field of play.

At any one time, there will be up to 65 volunteers out on the field of play. You will play a major part in the Sport Operations team. This role would be suitable for people who have experience in events and competitions.

Sport Competition Team Members: This role includes performing duties such as marshalling athletes, checking accreditation, escorting teams, access control around field of play and back of house, assisting green staff with equipment and card running etc.

Most duties will be rotated to ensure that every volunteer gets an opportunity to experience working on the field of play and behind the scenes of this amazing event.

Sport Information Team Members: These roles will liaise with team managers, athletes and officials from competing countries to ensure that they have all of the information and assistance that they require to make the Games an outstanding experience.

You’ll need great people skills and a strong knowledge of the sport of Lawn Bowls at an international level.

Scoreboard Attendants: There is a requirement to have one attendant to operate each scoreboard on every rink (24 rinks).

This role is suitable for someone with good knowledge of the sport as the scoreboard will need to be accurate at all times. You will need to be patient as games can sometimes be lengthy.

Paddle Holders: This is a new volunteer role for Lawn Bowls at the Commonwealth Games level. There is a strong focus to educate youthful officials at a high level, so this would be a fantastic opportunity for young, enthusiastic people looking to learn about officiating at an international event.

This will also provide an amazing experience being out on the field of play with some of the sport’s best players.
