Country Round-Up

by admin on December 23, 2016

Southern Zone mid-year wrap The Southern Zone contains the following leagues:  Central Stirling, Great Southern, Lower Great Southern, South Central Arunga, South East Coastal and Upper Great Southern
Below we will review each leagues pennant competitions to see which clubs and players are performing well up to the Xmas break.

CENTRAL STIRLING BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s Pennant

Champions:

Borden

Rounds Played:

9/14

Leader:

Tambellup 40pts

Top Skip:

Peter Lane (Jeramungup) 6.5 wins +59 shots

Summary: Tambellup are the league’s current leaders with 40 points but the other two sides holding finals places are right on their heels. Jerramungup and Broomehill both sit on 37 points in second and third respectively, ready to pounce on any slip up by Tambellup. There’s 7.5 points separating the three from the rest of the competition with Nyabing on 29.5 seeming the most likely to force their way into finals. Gowangerup White and reigning premiers Borden are also probably just close enough on 24.5 but it would take a big effort from there now.

CENTRAL STIRLING BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s Pennant

Champions:

Gnowangerup White

Rounds Played:

6/ 9

Leader:

Gnowangerup 12pts

Top Skip:

No Stats Available

Summary: After six weeks both Gnowangerup and Jerramungup are three wins and one loss in the one rink competition having beaten each once each. Both sides have won both their games against the competitions third side Tambellup to make it a two horse race. On previous form it would seem likely that both sides would beat Tambellup making their game against each other in the final round effectively a Grand Final. However if Tambellup were to beat either of the sides the equation for that final game would be a bit more intriguing.

GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s Pennant

Champions:

Moodiarrup

Rounds Played:

11/18

Leader:

Moodiarrup 46pts

Top Skip:

Murray Boxall (Darkan Blue) 8.5 wins +102 shots

Summary: Reigning premiers Moodiarrup are sitting pretty on top of the ladder once again after 11 rounds of their title defence. They have 10.5 point gap between them and Darkan Blue in second on 35.5 points while Kojanup Green 33 and Wagin White 32.5 make up the top four. Four of the five sides outside the four would consider themselves legitimate chances to work their way in with only last placed Wagin Black 15 too far back. Darkan Red 27.5, Kojanup Gold 26, Katanning 25.5 and Dumbleyung 23 all will have chances in the last seven rounds to claw their way into finals.

GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s Pennant

Champions:

Kojonup Gold

Rounds Played:

7/10

Leader:

Kojanup Gold 23pts

Top Skip:

Lyn Matthews (Kojanup Gold) 6 wins +39 shots

Summary: Kojonup Gold have been strong in their quest for another flag sitting on top with only two sides who can catch them with three rounds to play. They hold a three point lead over Wagin with 20 points who hold the same sized lead over Kojonup Green on 17. Katanning on 11 points could put Kojonup Green under pressure but appear more likely to be focussed on holding onto fourth spot while Dumbleyung 8 and Moodiarrup/Darkan 5 aren’t likely to figure much in the back end of the year.

LOWER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s 1st Division

Champions:

Middleton Beach Gold

Rounds Played:

9/14

Leader:

Albany Gold 49pts

Top Skip:

David Bojcun (Albany Gold) 8 wins +117 shots

Summary: Two sides have pushed clear of the field in the Lower Great Southern League’s first division. Albany Gold are on top with 49 pts while Middleton Beach Gold are also in a strong position with 41 points. Third placed Denmark are four aggregates worth of points back on 29 points who along with Middleton Beach Green with 26 will more concerned about holding their current positions than pushing up the ladder. Mt Barker Golf 23 and Albany Green 22 are very real threats to the top four while Albany Brown on 18 could be a slight chance with a big push.

LOWER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s 2nd Division

Champions:

Mt Barker

Rounds Played:

9/14

Leader:

Mt Barker Bowls 42.5pts

Top Skip:

Colin Toone (Mt Barker Bowls) 8 wins +81 shots

Summary: Mt Barker Bowls lead the comp with 42.5 points but face a strong challenge from the two Emu Point sides to hold onto it for the rest of the year. Emu Point Purple 38 lead Emu Point Red 34.5 and Albany Grey 29.5 in the four but the latter two will have to work hard to stay in their places. Walpole 27 and Middleton Beach 24 will be looking to mount strong campaigns in the new year Cranbrook 16.5 will struggle to make up the ground in time. Frankland 4 will be looking to throw a spanner in the works by winning a game or two.

LOWER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s 3rd Division

Champions:

Mt Barker Golf

Rounds Played:

9/14

Leader:

Mt Barker Golf White 45pts

Top Skip:

Henry Turner (Mt Barker Golf White) 8 wins +64 shots

Summary: Mt Barker Golf White sit on top of the ladder and little wonder since they have three of the top four skippers in the division. Denmark are second eight points back on 37 and should make the finals. Things are much less certain for Middleton Beach 28.5 and Mt Barker 27 as they are hunted by Emu Point 26.5 and Walpole/Denmark 25.5. Green Range 14 and Mt Barker Golf Blue 12 will struggle to make a run.

LOWER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s 1st Division

Champions:

Albany Green

Rounds Played:

11/14

Leader:

Middleton Beach Green 35.5pts

Top Skip:

Rhonda Wroth (Middleton Beach White) 8 wins +37 shots

Summary: With just three rounds left Middleton Beach Green have almost guaranteed themselves a top two finish and will look to lock up top spot in the coming games. Second placed Denmark are 10 points clear of fifth and need just two more rinks or one aggregate to guarantee a finals appearance. Emu Point have 26.5 points and are also in the box seat for a finals place however can’t afford to stop dropping games now. Middleton Beach White round out the four on 24 points, four points clear of fifth place. Reigning premiers Albany Green have struggled a little bit to be in that position but are still in the hunt as are Albany Gold on 19.5 and maybe Mt Barker Bowls on 16.5 but its unlikely.

LOWER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s 2nd Division

Champions:

Albany White

Rounds Played:

11/14

Leader:

Mt Barker Golf 28pts

Top Skip:

Neva Morgan (Cranbrook) 8 wins +22 shots

Summary: Mt Barker Golf lead a congested ladder with just one side out of the finals race. Although Mt Barker are top on 28 points there is the very possibility of losing top spot to Walpole who are just 1.5 points behind on 26.5 points. Emu Point 22.5 and Denmark 22 also hold finals positions but Cranbrook will like their chances on 18 points while Frankland bring up the field on 7 points.

SOUTH CENTRAL ARUNGA BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s Pennant

Champions:

Kulin

Rounds Played:

5/10

Leader:

Kondinin 20pts

Top Skip:

No Stats Available

Summary: Some Results Missing. Kondinin and Newdegate have started the strongest of the six sides equal top and undefeated with 20 points. Kukerin 18 and Karlgarin 16 are hot on their heels and will be looking to maintain their finals positions in the new year. Last year’s premiers Kulin have had a shaky start sitting a place outside the four with 9 points while Lake Grace are winless on 5.

SOUTH CENTRAL ARUNGA BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s Pennant

Champions:

Kondinin

Rounds Played:

Leader:

Top Skip:

Summary:

SOUTH EAST COASTAL BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Mens Pennant

Champions:

Scaddan

Rounds Played:

8/10

Leader:

Scaddan 34.5pts

Top Skip:

Robert Tate (Scaddan) 6 wins +26 shots

Summary: Reigning champs will play finals and currently sit top with just two rounds to go Condingup 2 are seven points back on 27.5 and will probably be more worried about keeping their spot in the three as will Esperance White on 24.5. All three sides outside of the three have a chance to make it. Esperance Blue 18, Condingup 1 17 and Esperance gold 16.5 will all need big finishes however both Esperance have a result still to be added so one of them will be poised even better to make a run.

SOUTH EAST COASTAL BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s Pennant

Champions:

Esperance Blue

Rounds Played:

10/15

Leader:

Scaddan 19.5pts

Top Skip:

Margaret Cahill (Esperance Blue) 4 wins +44 shots

Summary: The South East Coastal League is very tight with several permutations still possible with five games left to play. Scaddan 19.5 are just half a point in front of Esperance White in second while Esperance Blue sit third on 16, however they have played one game more than everyone else. Hopetoun aren’t out of the running for top spot by any means on 15 points and even last placed Condingup 10.5 are close enough to look at moving up through a couple of spots.

UPPER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s 1st Division

Champions:

Brookton

Rounds Played:

9/15

Leader:

Brookton 48

Top Skip:

No Stats Available

Summary: Reigning champions Brookton look favourites again having amassed 48 of a possible 56 points after their first seven games to lead the league by a street. Narrogin are the best pf the rest at this stage all the way back on 30 points but have played one more game than their competitors. With the game in hand third placed Wickepin will be eyeing them off just three points behind with 27. Williams sit just outside the finals placings on 26 points and with that extra game on Narrogin are real chances to play finals. Pingelly look unlikely at this stage on 13 points but aren’t so far back that a couple of eight pointers wouldn’t bring them back into it.

UPPER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Men’s 2nd Division

Champions:

Brookton

Rounds Played:

10/15

Leader:

Brookton 49 pts

Top Skip:

No Stats Available

Summary: Brookton’s dominance extends to second division where they are also top by some way. Their 49 points gives them a clear advantage over Lake Yearling in second on 32. 5 points. Wickepin 28 and Pingelly 27 round out the top four while Williams 24 are a very real threat in fifth. Narrogin are bottom on 19.5 points and could be in contention with a couple of wins in the coming rounds.

UPPER GREAT SOUTHERN BOWLING LEAGUE

Competition:

Women’s Pennant

Champions:

Brookton Black

Rounds Played:

5/9

Leader:

Brookton 21pts

Top Skip:

No Stats Available

Summary: Brookton complete the trifecta albeit much less convincingly in ladies pennants and lead with 21 points. Williams and Pingelly are hot on their heels with 18 and 16.5 points respectively. After half a season Wickepin have 4.5 points and look unlikely to threaten for the premiership.
