Bowls WA Awards Night – Small Country Club of the Year The Gnowangerup Bowling Club has been announced as the Small Country Club of the Year for 2016/17.
President Lex Martin accepted the award at the Bowls WA Awards Night heading up a large contingent of club members.
Gnowangerup received their award primarily due to the success of its small but talented membership.
Gnowangerup won the Central Stirling League pennant in both the men’s and ladies competitions as well as dominating league events with five wins and a worst result of third.
However, it was Gnowangerup’s Country Week performance that set them apart from other clubs.
They were named the champion club at the men’s event due to providing the winners of two events. Gnowangerup’s two most recent club champions Kevin Heberle and Victor Wellstead combined to win the Country Week Pairs. That same day Country All Star representative Arthur Crabbe led his side of Michael Johnson, Alan Shaddick and Greg Stewart to the Country Week Fours title.
The women also had a strong year with two Inter-Zone representatives and semi-final appearance in the Country Week Pairs from Mary Wellstead and Karen Dye.
The club did face its share of hard times this season having to repair damage to the club and greens from floods in February.
President Lex Martin spoke about the effect of the floods on the local area. “Yeah, the greens went under water but they came through,” Mr Martin said. “But generally, Gnowangerup and other shires down there have had one hell of a time to fix the millions of dollars of damage that’s been done.”
Despite the setback Mr Martin is happy with the state of the club and didn’t miss the opportunity to do some marketing while on the stage. “We have talent and there are only a handful of us,” he said. “We have empty houses in Gnowangerup if you want to come with the strength and come and join us. If not we have classics in November, come down and play bowls with us.”
