Women’s State Singles Preview and Draw

by admin on January 25, 2018

The Women’s State Singles kicks off on Saturday with a number of talented players receiving difficult draws. The 26 sections will be spread across three venues in Sorrento, Manning and Osborne Park with a number of major chances in the draw worth looking at.
Reigning champion Helen Morss starts of her title defence in section eight and has a very difficult start. She has drawn four time winner and team mate Therese Hastings. The winner of the section will have to be considered one of the favourites for the tournament. Last years runner up Helen Heal starts from section six ruling out a replay in the final
Another section boasting several major chances is section 17. Three of the nine players to have won the Connie Hicks Brooch have drawn each other in Noelene Abe, Lee Poletti and Liz Matthews. Between them there are four State Singles titles and four runner ups in the section. Whoever gets out of this section will certainly have earnt it and will be a major contender.
Sections 11 and 13 also standout as particularly tough sections to pick. Lisa Featherby and Toni Madigan are both strong state players and will meet in section 11 and both have claims should they get through. Wendy Stower, Kathy Gobbart and Shaan Saunders make for a tough trio in section 13 with all three players very capable of pushing on in when in good form.
There are two other former winners in this year’s draw. The 2012 winner Bev Baker will start her campaign in section seven against Patience Hoad and Sally Wilke. Baker was a winner in the recent State Pairs so comes in to the tournament in good form. Kristina Krstic will face Janet Cocks and Lyn Colmer in a tricky start in section 12. The 2016 winner will be one of the firm favourites coming into the tournament.
Other big chances looking for their first State Singles victory are Kerry Andersen, Linda Warburton, Laura Merz and Hailey Adams. All have shown over their careers their capabilities at state and national level with state titles and awards.
