Undefeated Teams

Around the Greens with the Rinkside Spy

Welcome back to around the greens for another round. A couple weeks back we looked at sides who had perfect records and hadn’t dropped a rink. After five games in metro pennants it may be a little unrealistic to expect a side to still be that level but there are more teams that haven’t lost an aggregate than you may think. We’ll have a talk about that hear.

Metro Men

Men’s Saturday pennants is the most prolific producer of undefeated sides with more than half of divisions containing a team yet to experience a loss. Of the 20 colours, excluding 6th who have only played three rounds, 11 of them are led by a side that is undefeated. This is particularly prevalent in 2nd and 3rd division who have three unbeaten sides each. The side with the most points is Sorrento 1 in 2nd blue who have only dropped a rink and a half. Their haul of 38.5 points is two more than any other side in men’s pennants and gives them a five point lead over the only undefeated team not to top their colour, Bedford, who have four wins and a draw. Sorrento are also one of only three clubs to have multiple undefeated teams as their 5th gold is also yet to lose. Manning in 2nd red and 5th white and Cockburn in 1st blue south and 4th red. Cockburn are also the only undefeated team left in first division as they seek promotion back to white.

Metro Women

The ladies are very different to their male counterparts with only two undefeated teams in the top three divisions. This might indicate that ladies pennants is more even than the men but time will tell on that front. Remarkably both of these sides actually play in the same division and are located within 10 kilometres of each other. In 2nd white both Safety Bay 1 and Warnbro ahave won their opening five games with Safety Bay currently sitting top with one extra rink win. In the next three rounds however they will play top half sides in all but one of Warnbro’s games. However potentially the two sides could meet each other still undefeated in round nine.

Country

There are plenty of teams in the country who are still undefeated however there are fewer on average in the city. This could be due to the greater variance in start dates which means some leagues have played more than five games, and winning streaks get harder to maintain as they grow. Two sides are tied for the longest streak thus far. Dowerin’s men are yet to lose in seven starts in the Avon Valley while Dudley Park Yellow have made just as good a go of it in the Murray League’s Ladies 4th Division. Unsurprisingly the Murray League has the most undefeated teams with five however they do have more teams and divisions than everybody else. One club has managed to have both a men’s and women’s side undefeated, something that hasn’t happened anywhere else in either country or metro pennants this season. Gingin top the table in the Moore Districts league in both the men’s and women’s competitions. The women are a little further along than the men with six wins while the Gingin Red men have four wins.
