WA champions off to Australian Championships

WA will be well represented at next week’s Australian Championships in Merimbula as state champions from around the country battle for the Australian title.

Western Australia will have competitors in six of the eight events at Club Sapphire with both the men’s and women’s pairs champions electing not to go.

As always the singles will be the most eagerly anticipated event with both WA reps facing potentially challenging draws.

Wagin’s Warren Holt will play tricky games against Jackaroos squad member Ray Pearse and talented South Australian Josh Studham as well as Queensland’s Jay Dawe.

He had a tough time at the National Champion of Champions in October but should be better for the run at the level.

Manning’s Kristina Krstic would have to be considered one of WA’s best chances. She’ll face former Manning and WA teammate Shenayde Heldt in her section as well as Jackaroo Carla Krizanic in what may be the game of the group stages.

In the triples Glen Pauling, Scott Walker and Dale Marsland will face sides from South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales with the Cabramatta combination of Corey Wedlock, Carl Healey and Billy Johnson looking the biggest threat.

Krstic will team up with Manning teammates Laura Merz and Robyn O’Brien in the triples and have a reasonable draw with games against the ACT, Tasmania and Victoria.

The men’s fours combo of Daniel Brown, Daniel Trewhella, Kevin McKay and Shane Loftus face a tricky section with games against Sean Ingham of Queensland and Anthony Flapper of Victoria looming as the biggest tests.

The women’s side of Helen Morss, Therese Hastings, O’Brien and Merz will face a tough game against Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist Natasha Scott but if they can win that game the rest of their draw looks okay.

Games will be played between December 3rd and 6th with one discipline playing per day.

The week will start with the triples with the fours to play on the 5th and singles concluding proceedings.

Results will be available through the Bowls Australia portal.
