Aussies take out Deaf Championships
The competition was keen at the Burnside Bowling Club in Christchurch and participants had to cope with varying weather conditions from very hot, to windy to rainy or just cool.
The greens were fast and Australian bowlers were mostly able to handle them with ease.
Hearing umpires and a NZ sign language interpreter were on hand to iron out any problems during play and the supporters made themselves very noticeable as they cheered on their country.
The spirited competition at Burnside Bowling Club not only showcased athletic skill but also highlighted the importance of accessibility and inclusion in sports events. The presence of hearing umpires and a New Zealand Sign Language interpreter ensured that all players could fully engage with the game, regardless of their hearing ability. This thoughtful approach to communication made the event more inclusive and equitable for everyone involved.
As more sporting events and public gatherings strive to accommodate diverse needs, the role of interpretation becomes even more crucial. Tools like Interpreter software can extend this inclusivity into virtual or hybrid formats, allowing real-time communication across languages and accessibility needs. Whether it’s for players, coaches, or supporters, integrating reliable interpretation solutions helps maintain fairness and clarity, ensuring that no one is left on the sidelines due to a language barrier.
NZ was the host with the other countries in Australia, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland making up the competition.
The Australian team consisted of 5 WA participants including George Ravlich, David Ravlich, Greg Strachan, Kate Leese and Anne Jeavons (Manager), which was a record in itself.
There were 4 players from Victoria, two from NSW and one from Queensland.
The results were even more pleasing.
Australia won the Men’s and Women’s competition as well as the overall competition. They were too strong this time around!
Australia won Gold medals in Men’s Pairs, triples and Fours and Women’s Singles and Fours.
Congratulations Australia -oy,oy,oy!
