by Kaitlin Tyrrell on February 25, 2019

Eastern Zones ILRR 4’s for the 2018/2019 season were hosted by the East Avon Bowling League (EABL) at the Kellerberrin Bowling Club, 2nd and 3rd February 2019.

The 5 Leagues of the Eastern Zone competed in the split rounds tournament over 2 days.

Goldfields (GFBL), South Eastern (SEBL), Central Wheatbelt (CWBL), Avon (AVBL) & East Avon (EABL).

Round 1- AM Saturday: At the end of Round 1 Avon +37 over EAvon, Avon +8 over Wheatbelt, Goldfields +2 over Wheatbelt, Goldfields +30 over Sth Eastern, EAvon +3 over Sth Eastern.  A great start for Avon setting themselves up well for their match up games in R3 vs EAvon & Goldfields also in a great position for their R3 match up game against Sth Eastern.

Round 2- PM Saturday: The afternoon saw the second round of the split round comp with Avon the only league not to lose a game giving them a great start of +shots up over Sth Eastern & Goldfields being carried over to Sunday’s R4. EAvon also put themselves in a good position for R4 with +15 win over Wheatbelt.

Due to the split round format played by Eastern Zone day 2 is the more interesting and challenging day where each League plays their match up Fours left over from the day before and hopefully hold onto any lead they established on day 1.

Round 3- AM Sunday:  EAvon finished well this round over Sth Eastern with 2 great wins to give them a total of +17 shots & 2 pts.  Avon continued their good bowls to claim 2pts & +42 shots over EAvon. Goldfields finished R3 well with a final tally of +28 & 2pts over Sth Eastern and they also gained another 2 pts & +17 over Wheatbelt.  Avon completed their games with Wheatbelt with a +17 shots win &  2 pts and more success with a good win over EAvon with+42 for another 2pts.

Round 4- PM Sunday: Avon were looking very strong with 4pts at the commencement of R4 and looking to gain another 2 pts with a handy +45 pt start vs EAvon. Goldfields, also on 4pts, would be their challengers as they were only -8 shots down to Avon at the start of their match in this round.  EAvon on 2pts also looking to take advantage of the pts scored earlier in Round 3 and add to it in the last round.  Wheatbelt & Sth Eastern still to win the overall in this last round to gain pts. Wheatbelt & Sth Eastern set to play reverse of R2 playing each other, Wheatbelt vs EAvon in R2 reverse,  Sth Eastern vs Avon in R2 reverse.

Avon held Goldfields off with another +5 shots gaining an extra 2 pts & also won 2pts over Sth Eastern, giving them 8pts for the tournament. Goldfields held onto their earlier 4pts & also gained 2pts with the overall win in reverse of R2 v EAvon.  Wheatbelt had a successful afternoon gaining 2pts over EAvon plus 2pts over Sth Eastern giving them total of 4pts for their tournament.

Well done to the Avon Bowling League on their win and also a big thank you and well done to the East Avon League and the Kellerberrin Sports Club and their volunteers for hosting and catering for a wonderful weekend of bowls for all the players, officials and spectators.
