Warburton and Andersen Dominate Final Day of the State Over 60’s Pairs
Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen (Mosman Park) dominated the final day of the Women’s Over 60’s State Pairs to take home the 2020 Title.
The final day started with the Semi-Finals on the undercover green at Cockburn Bowling Club with the threat of rain forecast.
The first Semi-Final saw the Warburton/Andersen combination come up against the Sorrento pairing of Jan Power-Tuke and Kerry Hutchinson. After dropping a double on the first end, Warburton and Andersen took control and rattled off five winning ends to take a 10-2 lead. Dropping a three on the seventh end didn’t slow them down as they continued to power on to eventually win 30-8.
The second semi-final showed all the hallmarks of a great contest between two great pairings. Super consistent performer, Irene Arndt (Safety Bay) teamed up with Open State Squad member Jenny Parker (Mosman Park) to take on the amazing sister combination of Lee Poletti (Mosman Park) and Vicki Spragg (Dudley Park).
Arndt jumped to a quick 4-0 lead before Poletti hit back with three winning ends to take a 5-4 lead and the game looked to be living up to the billing. However, when the Arndt/Parker pairing won five ends in a row, including three two’s and three, the game looked out of the Poletti/Spragg reach. While Poletti won four of the next five ends, she could only manager singles and the lead still looked a long way off at 9-15. A late three shots on the second last end gave Poletti some hope. But needing four on the last end was too much and Arndt and Parker made their way into the final.
Once the final started, early indications were they were going to need more numbers on the scoreboard as the scoring resembled a cricket match. First a sedate two to Warburton/Andersen followed by a three and four to Arndt/Parker set the scene for a quick scoring game. Warburton/Andersen then rattled off a three, five, four and a pedestrian single in the next four ends to lead 15-7 after only seven ends.
At this stage Arndt and Parker were playing quite well but Warburton and Andersen were on another level and answered every challenge. A two to Arndt and a couple of dead ends to keep them in it, wasn’t enough to stem the tidal wave when Warburton racked up another three and four to extend the lead to 22-10. Another run of four winning ends, saw the game called off early with Linda Warburton and Kerry Andersen well deserved champions 31-10.
