Boulder greatness remembered 70 years on

by Aaron Delaporte

With the 2021 edition of Country Week in full swing we have taken the opportunity to look back at what is surely considered the greatest ever club achievement which occurred 70 years ago.

Boulder Bowling Club created history by having teams in all three finals of the Men’s Country Week Championships. Beverley (1928), Northam (1946), Balingup (1957) and Bunbury (1970) can all lay claim to winning all three events in the same year but none of those clubs also provided the runner-ups.

Not to be outdone the Boulder Ladies also won two titles several weeks later at the Women’s Country Week with the ladies fours and singles added to the trophy cabinet.

For a small country club 1951 was certainly a year to remember for the Boulder Bowling Club.

Here is a breakdown of their incredible achievement:

Mens’ country week fours champions: Bill Mawby, Tom Sharp, Freddie Stephens and Vern Treloar.

Runners-up: Herb Curtis, Joe Osmetti, J. “Paddy” Burns and Maurie Marin.
