Bowls Blitz Finals Loom

by Pieter Harris on August 6, 2021

The Bowls Blitz is drawing to a conclusion with the final two round-robin games taking place at the Cambridge Bowling Club on Sunday 8th August before the top four teams play finals in the afternoon to determine the Bowls Blitz Champions

The Senior Recreation Council Sharpshooters had a huge day at Willetton the last time the Blitz was on and they now sit at the top of the leaderboard.

The Blooms the Chemist Stars have been in the top two positions on the ladder since the beginning and they continued that run by holding onto second position and are almost assured of a finals tilt at the title.

Third and fourth positions on the ladder are still up for grabs with three teams in with a big chance and a fourth team looking to come from the clouds, The Trophy Warehouse Pinnacles currently hold onto third position with a slender margin over the fourth-placed Dyenamic Cyclones. Variety the Childrens Charity Chargers are only 27 points behind fourth with the BCiB Blitz a further 30 points behind them making them still a chance if things go really well.

With each rink victory worth 10 points, there are plenty of points available with 60 rink win points plus 1 point for each end won available over the final two rounds.

As has been a regular feature for the first round of each day, Round 13 begins with three rinks of pairs playing 3 x 3.

The fate of the two chasing teams could be decided early, with the fifth-placed Variety The Childrens Charity Chargers taking on sixth-placed BCiB Blitz. Depending on the results from the teams in third and fourth, the loser of this contest could find themselves out of finals calculations. South Perth club teammates Glenn Pauling and Scott Walker go head to head in their quest to keep their team in the hunt

Fourth-placed Dyenamic Cyclones have a huge first-up fixture, up against second-placed Blooms the Chemist Stars. While it is unlikely that the Stars can miss out on the finals, it is still mathematically possible and they would not want to drop all the rinks in this fixture. A clean sweep would set the Cyclones up nicely to not only hold off the challenges outside the top four but also give them a chance to finish further up the ladder. Team Captains Clive Adams and Kristina Krstic go head to head in what will be a battle not to be missed.

In the match of the round, thrid placed Trophy Warehouse Pinnacles take on ladder leaders Senior Recreation Council Sharpshooters. The Sharpshooters had a stellar day the last time the Blitz teams got together and they will be looking to continue that form going into the finals. The Pinnacles are fighting for their finals survival over the final two rounds with not only the round 13 matchup against the Sharpshooters but also a last round match against second-placed Blooms the Chemist Stars. Pinnacles Captain John Slavich along with state lead Russell Bates takes on Justin Opie who has the Sharpshooters Captain Lisa Featherby helping him out.

The last match of the round sees the battle of seventh versus eighth. Neither the Henselite Enforcers nor the Liquor Traders Pirates had the day they would have liked at Willetton last time out, so they will both be looking for redemption. The loser of this game is almost certain to finish the round-robin at the bottom of the ladder so both teams will be going hard to make sure it is not them. Henselite team captain Cody Packer is up against Pirates captain Dave Rankin with both players looking to set a high bar for their teammates to follow.
