All To Play For After Day 2 of Bowls Blitz

by Pieter Harris on July 14, 2022

Despite the inclement weather, the Thornlie Bowling Club volunteers went above and beyond to provide the players with a great experience on Day 2 of the Bowls Blitz. Showcasing their Club and Greens to many players who had not been to Thornlie since the new clubhouse was built, it was a great day even though there was some rain and not a lot of sun.

Some games had to be cut short under the timed game’s conditions of play due to rain and partial green flooding but this didn’t stop the players from producing great bowls during the day.

After a poor first day and starting day 2 at the foot of the ladder, the BCiB Blitz came to play and have given themselves an opportunity to push for finals when play resumes on the final day at Cockburn Bowling Club on Sunday 31st July. After splitting the points with ladder leader Variety The Children’s Charity Charges first up, the Blitz followed that up by sweeping fellow cellar dwellers the Liquor Trader Pirates. Two more victories over top four teams Bloom’s the Chemist Stars and AFGRI Pinnacles and a final split points game with Senior Recreation Council Sharpshooters, put the Blitz in touch with the top four but still in seventh position on the ladder.

While the BCiB Blitz were moving up the ladder, first-day ladder leaders, Variety The Children’s Charity Charges, had a day they would like to forget and tumbled down the ladder. Loses to the Sharpshooters, the Dyenamic Cyclones, and Stars and split rinks with the Blitz put the leaders on the back foot. The Chargers only win was over the Henselite Enforcers and have left them in 6th position on the ladder with two rounds remaining.

The big mover in terms of ladder position on Day 2 were the Dyenamic Cyclones. Staring the day in sixth position, they had enough wins and gathered plenty of rink points to move to second on a crowded ladder. A total of 81 ends won over the day was six more than the Blitz and a massive fifteen more than ladder leaders AFGRI Pinnacles. Solid wins over the Stars, Pirates, and Chargers have put the Cyclones in good stead to play finals.

The AFGRI Pinnacles, Blooms The Chemist Stars, and Senior Recreation Council Sharpshooters, all had solid days to hold their positions in the top four with the Pinnacles moving up won position to lead the competition and the Stars and Sharpshooters holding firm at third and fourth respectively.

The Henselite Enforcers also held the fifth position on the ladder but made up points on the teams above. At one point it seemed the Enforcers were in actual equal top on the ladder at the end of the day but a double check on the totals saw them lose points that were double counted which saw them fall out of the top four showing how tight the competition is.

The only team that cannot make the top four is the Liquor Trader Pirates. Another difficult day on the greens saw the Pirates only take the majority of points in one fixture and split the rinks in another. While they may not be able to make the four, the Pirates will still be looking to shape the four on the final day of the Bowls Blitz.

All eyes now turn to the Cockburn Bowling Club with the final day on Sunday 31st July. With two final rounds in the morning followed by Semi-Finals and the Grand Final in the afternoon, it is sure to be an action-packed day. Only 24 points separate first-placed Pinnacles and sixth-placed Chargers with the BCiB Blitz in seventh place only 29 points behind the fourth-placed Sharpshooters. With 60 rink points plus ends points available in the last two rounds, there are more than enough points available for the Blitz to make a push for Finals.
