Tony Perrella is the toast of Roleystone as he heads home with the 2023 Men’s Novice Singles Champion of Champion trophy with a hard-fought win over Thornlie’s Harrison Mayers.

In the first semi-final Tony Perrella was matched up against Cockburn’s Jason Kop. Both players were able to get on the score card early and continued to trade blows for much of the game. At 4-4 after four ends, Perrella was then able to jump out to a mini lead at 9-5 only to see Kop reel him in and tie it up at 10-10. Again, the two men went into trading shots mode with first Kop grabbing the lead and then Perrella answering. At 16-16 after nineteen ends, Jason Kop was able to string together three ends in a row and looked to have established a lead at the right time at 19-16. However, it was not to be as Tony Perrella won three ends in a row for himself including a two to level the scores up at 19-19 and then another two to book a place in the final 21-19.

Harrison Mayers found himself up against Scarborough’s David Tunnicliffe in the second semi-final. Tunnicliffe started well with a three on the first end but then Mayer took over, winning the next eight ends to lead 11-3. A single to Tunnicliffe was followed by two threes to Mayers and the game looked over at 17-4. It was then that Tunnicliffe showed some fight with a three and then a couple of ends later a four to get the score back to 12-19 but it was too late and Mayers closed it out with a single and a two to win 21-12 and win a place in the final.

The final started with Tony Perrella on fire winning the first six ends, including two threes and leading 11-0. Harrison Mayers finally got on the board with a single only to see Perrella again win two ends to lead 14-1. However just as quickly as Perrella started, Mayers fought back by winning seven consecutive ends of his own, also including two threes, to take the lead 15-14. A three to Perrella put him to 17 and only one end from the title. A single to Mayer, a single to Perrella and another single to Mayer and suddenly the game had slowed down to a tense pace and an 18-17 lead to Perrella. Bowl for bowl, the two players went in a match worthy of a final. Another single to Perrella, followed by another put him within a single of the championship. As much as Harrison Mayer tried, he could not deny Tony Perrella the final shot. With a final score of 21-17, Tony Perrella from Roleystone was announced the 2023 Men’s Novice Singles Champion of Champions winner.
