WA Men make their move at the Australian Sides Championships

by Pieter Harris on October 14, 2023

The second day of the Australian Sides Championships at the Sorrento Bowling Club were played in very warm conditions with the competition passing the halfway mark with rounds 3 and 4 being completed.

The WA Women had a comfortable win over the Northern Territory in the morning, winning on all three rinks with a 71-37 aggregate. The rink of Hailey Packer, Donna Blackwell, Kaitlin Tyrrell, and Linda Warburton won 22-12, Lisa Featherby, Helen Stevens, Denise Kelly, and Jenny Parker won 20-12 and Kristina Krstic, Chris Ace-Watson, Lisa Brannan and Lisa Smith won 29-13.

The afternoon matchup saw WA up against the winless South Australian ladies. Unfortunately for our ladies, a slow start cost them dearly and they were never able to recover. The Lisa Featherby rink had a 20-all draw but the other two rinks went down leading to a 51-68 loss.

The loss saw WA drop down to fourth on the ladder but still well and truly in the hunt for the gold medal. Teams first to fourth all have 3 wins and 1 loss and are only separated by rink wins, with Queensland moving to first position.

The WA Men had a great day with 2 solid wins. First up saw WA defeat NT 61-35 with Blake Nairn, Clive Adams, Bill Brandsma, and Scott Walker having the big win 28-5 and Daniel Trewhella, Shane Knott, Warren Holt, and Blake Butler winning 19-11.

The afternoon fixture was an evenly matched contest against South Australia, with our WA boys jumping out of the blocks. This time it was the Cody Packer, Anthony Williams, David Downey, and Jack East rink with the biggest win 27-15. The Blake Nairn rink had another rink win 18-15, with WA taking the aggregate 58-48.

With 2 wins today, the Western Australia men have moved up into third spot on the ladder with 3 wins and 1 loss, With both New South Wales and Queensland undefeated in first and second.

Tomorrow sees WA take on Victoria in the morning and Queensland in the afternoon, with wins a must if our men and women hope to be playing for medals on Monday.
