Only one day remaining in the Australian Sides Championships

by Pieter Harris on October 15, 2023

Another very warm day at the Australian Sides Championships at the Sorrento Bowling Club today as we wind down to the conclusion of the championships on Monday.

The WA Women needed a strong day to stay in contention for a gold or silver medal at the Championships. Unfortunately, despite winning two rinks, a heartbreaking one-shot loss 55-56 to Victoria in the morning put the WA ladies back in the pack with a number of other states.

The afternoon round saw WA take on Queensland who were one win above them on the ladder. Once again, the game went down to the wire and once again WA were unable to get the points going down 53-56.

Queensland finished the day on top of the ladder with five wins equal with Victoria with New South Wales one game back in third position. WA is currently fifth on the ladder and take on the fourth-placed team the Australian Capital Territory in the final round. WA will need all three rinks to move into fourth position at the end of the Championships.

The games to shape the top two positions in the final round will be 1st-placed Queensland versus 3rd-placed New South Wales and 2nd-placed Victoria versus 8th-placed Tasmania.

The WA Men had better luck in their game against Victoria in the morning fixture. The Blake Nairn, Clive Adams, Bill Brandsma, and Scott Walker rink had a decisive 32-6 win setting up the final 63-48 aggregate win.

The afternoon round saw our men take on the undefeated Queensland team with a win required to stay in with a chance to grab a medal. Queensland jumped out of the blocks quickly establishing a 15-20 aggregate margin. WA threatened multiple times to reduce that deficit to single figures, but Queensland continually came up with the big bowl to keep WA at bay 41-59.

WA go into the final round in third position on the ladder, with a win over the ACT sewing up that position with a 5-win, 2-loss series.

The big match to see in the men’s final round will be the undefeated New South Wales and the undefeated Queensland fighting it out for Championship glory.
