Star studded fields race for the title

by Clive Adams on January 23, 2024

After a massive opening day of the Dyenamic WA State Singles, an amazing array of talent remains in contention for the two coveted State Singles titles. The Women’s field saw 17 players emerge from the first day’s play, while the Men’s field, one round further back, still has 48 hopefuls looking for the title.

DYENAMIC WOMEN’S STATE SINGLES

Saturday’s action (27th January) in the Women’s event moves to Bassendean, where one round of 32 match, and a good match at that, between Kristina Krstic and Jenny Parker will be played to settle the final 16. Joondalup will host the semi-finals and final on Sunday 28th January.

MATCH OF THE ROUND – Lisa Featherby v Therese Hastings

Two genuine stars of the sport collide right here in a battle for a quarter final berth. Therese Hastings, a four time winner of this event, and the only player to have won the event in three consecutive years (2004, 2005, 2006), blasted through a difficult section defeating Laura Butler and Klaire Hughes, before defeating Lexie Webster in the knockout round.

Lisa Featherby is a regular in the final stages of Women’s State events, but has yet to taste ultimate glory in the State Singles event. A runner-up performance in 2022 is sure to have Featherby steeled for a big tilt at the title. Featherby survived a close match against Maureen Cooney in her section before moving through to eliminate last season’s semi-finalist Deb Saunders 21-19 in the knockout match.

DYENAMIC MEN’S STATE SINGLES

Osborne Park and Bassendean play host to the continuing rounds of the Men’s competition. Of the 48 remaining players in the field, six have won the title before, dating back to 1997 when Justin Opie saluted, to more recently with Cody Packer, David Downey and Blake Nairn having won the most recent three titles. Warren Holt and Clive Adams round out the six former champions still remaining.

MATCH OF THE ROUND – Warren Holt (Wagin) v Ben Leggett (Joondalup)

A tough choice to decide on match of the round, however it was too hard to resist a matchup between a former champion of this event, and an up and coming star and recent State Champion. Holt won this event in 2018, and actually held the Champion of Champion Singles title at the same time, whereas Leggett was successful in the State Fours earlier in the season.

Holt had just the one match on the opening day, winning 21-12, while Leggett, who had just the one match in his section, prevailed in a thriller, 21-20. Leggett then faced former clubmate Stein Davies, winning 21-14 to progress to a highlight matchup with Holt.
