Laura Butler Australian Open Women’s Singles Champion
Laura Butler has beaten the number one women’s player in the world, Kelsey Cottrell, to claim the Australian Open Women’s Singles Trophy.
Laura has had a tremendous two weeks, going deep in all three Australian Open Disciplines.
Jumping out of the blocks with a pair of two’s to lead 4-nil was a great nerves settler and turned out to be the biggest lead of either player for the whole match.
The game went bowl for bowl with Laura and Kelsey swapping the lead for the majority of the match with nine lead changes over the 23 ends played.
The game looked like it could be getting away from Laura in the later stages, when Kelsey won three ends in a row including a three to lead 19-16 in the first to 21 shots game. But Laura was not phased and grabbed a three of her own to get to 19-19 and then closed it out with a two to become the 2024 Australian Open Women’s Singles Champion.
