Medals for the West!
Sophie Hays and Callum Alberti have done Western Australia proud today claiming medals in the Australian Under-18s Championships in Devonport, Tasmania.
While our entire Under-18 crew have represented with pride and passion, the two Osborne Park stars have risen above some of the toughest conditions they have faced in their careers to both secure medals from the singles events.
Hays takes home bronze after an outstanding performance against opponents boasting far greater experience at these events. Facing the top two positioned players today, Hays defeated the eventual gold medalist Anda Panchawat (SA) 21-17, before going down to NSW star Chanel Chakouch by just one shot in the final round robin match 20-21. The one shot defeat leaves Hays with the bronze – a reward for the hard work she has put in attending major events, both at home and on the east coast, looking to improve her game and is now a launching pad for future events.
Alberti, another who is always looking to improve his game and is a rising star in the sport, secured the bronze medal in a very strong boys field following wins in his final two matches today against South Australia and Victoria – those brave wins pushed him into third place and just two shots from silver. Tim Thorning of New South Wales took the gold, with Jordan Sturgiss (ACT) claiming silver.
Congratulations to our two medalists and well done to all who represented our great State!
