Over 60’s take to National Stage

by admin on October 8, 2015

to be played at Launceston, Tasmania The Men’s and Women’s State Over 60’s teams will travel to Launceston, Tasmania to contest the National Over 60’s Sides Series this weekend. Play will begin on the afternoon of Monday October 12th with another three days of play before the champion state is crowned on Thursday October 15th.
The WA Women’s side will be attempting to defend the title they won last year at Tweed Heads (pictured), side manager Sue Hogg commented

“This year the WA women are fielding another very strong team and will attempt to win back to back titles. Renate Coote (Mosman Park) and Irene Leahy (Boulder) have been recalled to the team after strong performances in state events last year. Elaine McDonald (Eaton) a former state representative and Linda Warburton (Mosman Park) a current state representative bring with them a wealth of experience as does Linda Young (Meadow Springs) who is highly regarded in her league.
It is interesting to note that eight members of the team live in the country.
We expect the competition to be as strong as it has been in previous years with experienced and former state players competing in all state sides. This year the Northern Territory will compete in the women’s competition for the first time.”
The Men’s team finished a creditable third last year but have a very strong team capable of taking the title. Manager and Chairman of Selectors Roger Barns commented

“I believe we have a really good chance of being in the top three again but are very hopeful that with the inclusion of Gary Caffell, and Chris Lander both very experienced players that we could win our first ever over 60’s carnival.
The boys are very keen and this showed when we played our annual warm up game against Osborne Park and won on all rinks with big margins, something that we haven’t done before.
Our mindset must be turned on for all games as the conditions will be different to that we are used to in Perth with  possible cold weather & slow greens, but we have selected a very strong team of 12 who are determine to perform at their best.
In the 3rd game that we play Lindsay Thorn will be the 1st player in the over 60’s to notch up 50 games for Western Australia.
Our first game against Queensland will be our big test we should have beaten them last year and if we had we may have won the series, they along with N.S.W and Victoria will be the hardest to beat, but as we all know if we have a strong mindset each day and compete to our best ability then we could bring back the cup for the first time.”
Bowls WA will provide live scores on our Facebook Page during every round of competition and also a summary of each day of play on the website.
Good luck to both teams and all player.
