Round 1 in Review

by admin on October 25, 2015

BCiB Bowls WA Pennants The pennant season officially kicked off this weekend with round one of the men’s and women’s Saturday pennant competition. Margins varied from 0 to 116 shots across the metro area on a beautiful day for bowls and, for the first time, 5th division was played by three rink teams rather than the traditional four and had five colours.
It didn’t take long for the first draw of the season with Mt Pleasant and Thornlie splitting the points in four white. At the other end of the spectrum we saw the season’s first 100+ shot margin in the very same division with Willettons monstrous 116 shot win over Melville. The same game saw the first fifty badge earned for the 2015-16 season with the rink of Michael Pearson, George Sheardown, Brian Gilbert and John Hadley raising the bat in their 48 shot victory.
Innaloo’s five blue team showed the value of having consistency across all your rinks in their 86 shot victory over Innaloo. All three rinks contributed with two 27 shot victories and one 26 shot win. In contrast the four gold encounter between Yokine and Bassendean showed that bowls can be a game of very small margins. Yokine claimed seven and a half of the eight points on offer but only won by six shots. Each of their three rink wins were by just two shots making the game the closest across the board encounter of the round.
The closest division was certainly premier league with the largest margin of the day Cambridge’s fourteen shot victory over Wanneroo. Hopefully this is a sign of tight finals race throughout the year.
The Round in Review will be a weekly column so did something happen during your game? Any strange coincidences occur or weird stories to tell? Any records broken? Let us know at enquiries@bowlswa.com.au and everyone could know about it.
