WA Girls secure Silver medal

Wrap of Day 3 at Australian Sides Championships The two Western Australian sides have continued in their vastly different form lines as they both picked up surprising results. Saturday’s games saw the women continue their medal push and defeat Victoria which before the tournament would have been considered a massive upset. That victory as well as an earlier win over Tasmania has assured the WA side of a silver medal. On the other side of coin the men were the victim of what could have been considered a minor upset losing to the in form Tasmania in the morning session. A competitive loss to the undefeated Victoria sees WA in seventh place going into their final game against the winless Northern Territory.

Against Tasmania the men struggled early and struggled to get back in the game. The Apple Isle shot out to a thirteen shot lead in the first twenty ends of the game and maintained it throughout the game. Whilst not falling further the behind WA were unable to put a dent in the deficit and finished the game fourteen shots behind their opponents.

The women by contrast started the game well shooting out to an early lead. After surviving an early rally by the Tasmanians the West Australians dominated the middle of the game to build a hefty advantage. Between the 19th and 42nd end WA scored 38 shot to 12 and took control. The Tasmanians steadied but the damage was already done and WA finished with a comfortable 25 shot win.

In the afternoon the men faced an undefeated Victorian side brimming with confidence. The WA boys however put in one of their better performances for the tournament giving the Vics an almighty scare. After being about ten shots down WA fought back strong to be in it up to their eyeballs at just two shots behind with eight ends to play. Those eight ends however belonged to Victoria as their class came to the forefront as they powered home to a ten shot win.

The WA women faced a stern test against Victoria whose previous only loss was to New South Wales. After surviving a poor start WA got themselves back to even at the halfway point of the match. The match remained anybody’s until the last eight ends when WA turned their two shot advantage into a twelve shot win. The win came on the back from a massive performance by Kristina Krstic and her rink as they recorded a 24 shot win over fellow young gun Chloe Stewart.

The men head into their last game against the winless Northern Territory looking to leave the capital on a high note. A win could see them move into sixth place above the loser of the Queensland vs ACT match depending on the scale of the two results. The women will not play on the final day of the competition due to the absence of the Northern Territory side, the WA girls can instead celebrate a fantastic achievement collecting a silver medal behind the powerful NSW side.
