Around the Greens

Edition 2 Eights Galore This week we start our journey around the greens with no less than four eight badges. We start with an exceedingly rare Premier League eight badge with Dan Penman, Michael McRae, Enda Munelly and Stuart Masterson from South Perth getting one against Manning. Unfortunately for them it wasn’t enough for them to get the rink win or the aggregate. In 1st Blue South Gosnells’ Dean Calvo, Stephen Harris, David Bradbury and Philip Deas picked one up on their way to a 28-22 win as one of Gosnells’ two points for the day. The ladies of Denise Abe, Jean Lovett, Elaine Sinclair and Helen Philp got one early to take the lead in their game 9-3. They held on to win 25-23 to secure Willeton’s only point in 2nd Red. Last but certainly not least last week Bill Madigan, Rodney Robertson, Syd Crees and George Cooper picked up an eight for Merredin Civic against Narembeen.
A couple of 1st division sides have made excellent starts to their campaign to be in places we didn’t expect to see them. In ladies 1st White newly promoted Leeming have dropped just one rink to enjoy a five point lead at the top of the ladder. This highlights the depth of quality at the club as Leeming also have a Premier League side now more or less part of the furniture in the top flight. In Men’s 1st White late promotees Warnbro have started with a bang with 15.5 points from their first two games. The Wizards came in for Innaloo on the edge of the season when they decided to drop their White team due to player losses. Benefitting from mass recruitment and the current 1st Blue pennant winners they look capable. Right up there with them is another promoted team in Sorrento who sit in third. A good start is vital for any promoted team’s chances of holding. Finally in Premier League two sides have made fine starts to the year. Morley sit in third in their first PL campaign in many years and have 13.5 valuable points to help them hold. After making the finals last year player losses meant some saw Kardinya as relegation candidates but they’ve made a fine start to the new year. They started by beating reigning premiers Manning before taking valuable away points against fellow expected battlers Stirling. They currently sit second and who knows how long they can stay up there.
Speaking of great starts a number of teams are currently perfect through their first two or three games are. Following sides have picked up every point available so far:
Men
Midland Morrison 3rd Blue
Cambridge 5th Blue
Manning 5th White

Women
Joondalup 1st Green North
Innaloo 2nd Green
Scarborough 2nd Green
Kardinya 3rd White

We’ll finish with more good news as even more bowlers are now hitting the greens. Ladies 4th Division started their competitions on Wednesday while Men’s 6th Division will begin this Saturday.
We wish all those players luck in the coming season.
