Caffell wins it with his last
Men’s Over 60’s Triples wrap Gary Caffell, Pat Caffell and Alan Pryce are this season’s State Over 60’s Triples champions after a thrilling finish to the championships.
They won the final over the Sorrento side of Chris Lander, Bruce Eagles and Brian Clausen at the Caffells’ home club of Osborne Park yesterday afternoon.
It was a quality final despite blustery conditions making it tough for players to be consistent.
There was an adjustment period during the first few ends of the game as the players came to terms with the wind picking up but afterward the quality of the match couldn’t be faulted.
After the first four ends the scores we’re locked at 2-2 thanks to Chris Lander who twice killed the fourth end, once when down five.
That tightness continued for the first half the game, Bruce Eagles’ consistency in difficult conditions a standout and ensuring Lander always had something to work with.
Caffell held a 6-4 lead at the halfway but played good shots to take advantage of less tight head to pick up five on the tenth.
It gave his side an 11-4 lead, the biggest at any point in the game.
It would prove to be important as Sorrento kept chipping away at the lead winning five of the next six ends.
Four consecutive singles had Caffell still in front 12-11 going into the last end.
Leader Clausen started the side off well and his team followed.
Despite two great efforts from Pat Caffell Lander crossed over with two shots to hold game.
He drew another with his last forcing Caffell into some tough decisions down to two bowls just behind the jack and one in front.
He chose to go big at the head and got the front shot onto the two back shots to clean out all three and end up with shot.
The 13-11 score line was by far Caffell’s closest game for the tournament with only one other match having been decided by single digits.
It underlined the tightness of the game in which all six players did their bit in throughout the game.
