Edition 8 The Return from Xmas

We’re back on the green now with a chance to walk off all the extra ham, turkey and mince pies we’ve eaten over the Christmas break. Coming out of our slumber we now come to possibly the busiest time of the year with the State Singles, Country Inter Leagues, Over 60s Singles and Men’s Masters Pairs all coming up in the next couple of months. All of this is running alongside club carnivals and of course the pennant competitions that we’ll continue to monitor here.
We’ll start with Men’s Saturday pennants where this week’s fixtures were crucial in 3rd Blue in the battle to avoid demotion. The bottom four sides all played each other and the results caused a shakeup to the division’s outlook. Mt Lawley started the day in seventh place but a win over Osborne Park 1 has moved them up into sixth. More importantly the fact they picked every point gives them an 8.5 gap as opposed to the 3.5 margin they had before. The loss sees Osborne Park fall into ninth following Bedford’s win over bottom place Sorrento allowed them to escape. However they only have a four point gap and with Kalamunda only seven points clear following their loss we surely haven’t heard the last of this bottom half battle.
In Men’s Premier League there was a crucial fixture between Bassendean in seventh and South Perth in eighth. The winner would receive a huge boost in escaping the demotion fight and potentially keep faint finals hopes alive whilst defeat would certainly mean a real struggle to stay in the top flight. Bassendean defended their home track to remain two aggregates clear of relegation and push into mid table while South Perth’s misery was enhanced by Wanneroo’s upset win over Morley. They are now only two points away from ninth and need to a turn in form quickly.
In 3rd Green on Tuesday the Forrestfield ladies kept themselves in the race for promotion with a win over top of the ladder Glen Forrest. With only the top placed team getting promoted and 4.5 point gap already existing between the two sides a loss would have made any sort of challenge hard to resurrect. The result has created a four-way race for top with only 2.5 points separating new leaders Bayswater and 4th placed Mt Lawley. Forrestfield jumped Glen Forrest with the two sides now second and third respectively. Games between those four sides are going to be very exciting particularly as we near the end of the season.

A reminder that individuals or clubs are welcome to submit any interesting results or happenings from any inter-club competition to enquiries@bowlswa.com.au.
