by Denise McMillan on May 2, 2023

The 2023 Women’s Inter Region Round Robin (IRRR) was played over the weekend of April 29 and 30 at Morley Bowling Club as host venue for Eastern Region.  Each of the four metropolitan regions rotate hosting the annual IRRR event – next year’s host will be South Coastal.

Regions include Eastern, South Coastal, Southern, and Northern – shown here are the 2023 Regional Sides:

Eastern Region

South Coastal Region

Southern Region

Northern Region

Each region has six teams who play the other regions in a round robin format – this covers the first three rounds of the competition over Saturday and Sunday morning – twenty-four teams playing 12 concurrent games!

Eastern shot out of the gate in the first game by winning 100% of their first round games; however, their momentum slowed down with only two wins in the second and third round.  Four of the teams won two games out of three with the team skips being B Bending, K Turpin, P Bayliss, and A Gunson.

South Coastal region struggled from the onset of round one coming out with zero wins, then progressing to two tied games in round two from D Tyers and L Collins, and in round three came away with two wins from S Burch and T Hyatt.

Southern started out rocky with only one tied game in round one, and then the engines started firing winning four games in both the second and third rounds.  Two game winners included K Rush and C Bolt, while A Gray’s team had a tie in round one and a win in round three.

And then we come to the Northern Region … they started strong with five wins and a tie in round one … and progressed to four wins in both round two and round three.  Three game winners were P Bourne, L Rughoobur, and C Taylor.  S Tope’s team were two game winners, while P Boardman’s team came away with two ties and a win, and S Robinson came away with one win and a tie.

In Summary, Northern came first with 42 Points and a Margin of 175, Eastern came second with 30 Points and a -40 Margin, Southern came third with 25 points and a -19 Margin, and in last place is South Coastal with 8 points and a -111 margin.

Following on from the regional round robin games is the ALL STAR GAME on Sunday afternoon.  During regional play all selectors are viewing their players with an eye to selection in the All Star Game, played on Sunday afternoon, where the best of the best play off in timed round robin games to end the weekend tournament.

Quite often different regions win the two different sets of games; however, 2023 was not going to be one of those years with Northern region continuing their strong play into the All Star game winning with 12 points and a +14 margin, South Coastal improving their games and coming second at 9 points and a +12 margin, closely followed by Eastern with 7 points and a -1 margin, then Southern who also had 7 points but with a -25 margin.

Congratulations to all the players, selectors, managers, host venue, greenskeepers, kitchen workers, and other volunteers who work together to make such a great event run smoothly.

Next year brings the event back into the South Coastal Region.
