Senior Women jump out at Joondalup

by Clive Adams on October 8, 2023

Day Three of the Nationals 2023 saw action at Warwick in the Para-Nationals event, and at Joondalup for the first time in Bowls Australia’s showcase of bowls, with the Seniors Sides Series kicking off in style.

Senior Sides Series

WA’s women’s team started the competition in the best way possible with two big wins to commence the home town campaign. An impressive 64-36 win over South Australia was followed by another big win over Tasmania 67-37. The two wins are the perfect launching pad, with the Northern Territory and Queensland to play tomorrow.

Noelene Abe and Kathy Gobbart both skipped their rinks to two wins from the two outings, with Abe currently equal top rink for the competition alongside NSW’s Anne Miles.

In contrast, the WA men had a less satisfying day, dropping both matches and needing a big performance tomorrow to work their way back into contention. A narrow loss to South Australia, followed by a high scoring loss to Tasmania leaves the team with work to do heading into the second day of the series.

John Goddard’s crew recorded two wins for the day and will look to take that form into tomorrow’s matches.

Para-Nationals

In a quieter day for WA, Maud Taylor had a big final round win in the singles but was unable to catch Commonwealth Games star Serena Bonnell who qualified in section 4. Jodie Nikolic fought hard against Cheryl Lindfield in the first live streamed game of the day but it was Lindfield that was just too good in the middle to late stages of the match. Diana Nixon also recorded two wins from two outings today.

Tomorrow’s action will be highlighted with Eddie Gollan in the semi-finals of the B7/8 singles as he meets another Commonwealth Games star, from 2018, Josh Thornton. The final will follow, and we hope to see Gollan in there fighting for gold.
