Eddie Gollan does WA Proud

by Pieter Harris on October 9, 2023

Day Four of the Nationals 2023 saw the Para-Nationals event wrap up at Warwick, and the Senior Sides Series continued at Joondalup in Bowls Australia’s showcase of bowls.

Para-Nationals

It was the final day of the Para-Nationals at the Warwick Bowling Club today and WA only had the one competitor in action with Eddie Gollan competing in the Semi-Final of B7/8 singles.

Eddie put on a wonderful display and threw everything at 2018 Commonwealth Games star, Josh Thornton (Victoria). Eddie jumped out to a 5-0 lead early in the game and led 8-4 before Josh got two 3’s over three ends to take a 10-9 lead. It was nip and tuck from then on with Eddie looking at victory with a 19-17 lead. However, it was not to be, with Josh showing his class to close out the game with consecutive 2’s to win 21-19. Congratulations Eddie Gollan on a great tournament.

Congratulations to the Warwick Bowling Club and all the volunteers on a wonderful job looking after all the Para Athletes, officials, and spectators.

Senior Sides Series

The WA’s women’s team had another solid day at Joondalup notching another win but also having their first loss. The morning game saw a comfortable 73-45 win over the Northern Territory, with the highlight being Kathy Gobbart and her rink’s 33-12 win. The afternoon game saw the WA women’s first defeat with an agonizing 56-58 loss to Queensland. Kaye Blackwell’s team was WA’s only rink win with a 23-17 victory.

Our ladies currently sit in 3rd position on the ladder behind New South Wales, who are undefeated, and Victoria who have more rink points. It is a big game first up in the morning at Joondalup with WA up against NSW.

The WA men had a much better second day with a first-up win over the Northern Territory 77-53. The Chris Lander rink had a big game with a 33-17 win. The afternoon fixture saw the WA men up against the undefeated and ladder-leading Queensland team. It was tense last few ends as the result could have gone either way and in the end, it didn’t go either way when both sides had to settle for a draw. It was the Brad King rink with a 25-10 win that got the points for WA.

At the end of the day, the WA men sit 6th on the ladder with a win and a draw, but with no state left undefeated, a big day against New South Wales and the ACT tomorrow will see our boys rise up the ladder.
